Nepal's first Urine Bank Establish in Siddhipur

Image The villagers of Siddhipur VDC have set up an example of innovative initiatives for environmental sanitation by establishing a Urine bank in their village. This is the first urine bank in Nepal which has been initiated for the proper management and utilization of human urine as a fertilizer to increase crop production.

Experiments explore the potential of urine as fertilizer

On the outskirts of Kathmandu, Siddhipur village has rediscovered the value of urine. More than 100 toilets in the village divert urine to farms, where it is used as fertilizer. It is not a new practice, though. The village was recycling urine before modern fertilizers were introduced. “In the past, people would urinate in a pit of ash and rice husk under their staircase. They would then use the composted material as fertilizer,” said Jiban Maharjan of Siddhipur.

Conservation of traditional stonespouts in Lalitpur

Image Lalitpur Sub Metropolitan City has put on display the poster of traditional stonespouts of Lalitpur at its office. The poster displays city map with the list and location of traditional stonespouts in the municipality area. It is believed that the poster will not only disseminate information about the present situation of traditional stonespouts to the officials and general public but also create awareness for their conservation.
