Bagmati River becomes source of livelihood |

It is a common sight in Kathmandu to see people squint their noses seeing the dirty drainage filled water of the Bagmati River. But it may be difficult to believe that the Bagmati river has become the source of livelihood and good income for many people. People have not only been running their family smoothly but also sending their children to school and handling other daily works and expenses by fishing in the Bagmati river.

Water and sanitation (WATSAN), which were considered as developmental issues, are nowadays treated as basic right by most of the stakeholders and sector players of Nepal and other countries. Nepal has targeted to reduce the population deprived from safe drinking water and proper sanitation to half by 2015 to meet the Millennium Development Goal at local level. Similarly, the country has targeted to provide proper WATSAN facilities to all by 2017 in its National goal.

Through community effort, the traditional Newar community of Shrikhandapur village has proved that liquid waste can generate income and save environment, if managed wisely. Kavrepalanchowk has been facing the inevitable side effect of urbanisation – river pollution. The local Punyamata River, flowing from Banepa to Panauti through Shrikhandapur, which is considered a holy river, has been the victim of this. |
