Tariff hike, the only achievement in the last two years

Drinking water projects have been a much awaited dream for the Kathmanduites. The investments made in drinking water have not been fruitful and mostly limited in papers. In practice, drinking water has been a mirage for the Kathmanduites. Drinking water shortage problem has been a daily headache for the past many years. It seems that drinking water shortage will be more severe in the coming dry season.

Supplier hikes water tariff

Image Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) today lived up to its earlier announcement to hike water tariff, much to make a killing. Despite the acute shortage, the new water tariff structure will come into effect from December 16, 2009. It would further hit hard the already harried users amidst dilapidated water supply system.

Water to become dearer

Valley dwellers facing water shortages will have even more to worry about from December 16 with the hike in water tariff by Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL), the Valley’s water utility. The decision was approved by the commission formed to revise the proposed drinking water tariff.
“It has been five years since the price was last revised,” said Rameshwor Lal Shrestha, spokesperson of KUKL. “The prices of pipes and other necessary repairs have increased in these five years. KUKL also uses large amounts of electricity and it is becoming impossible to pay the electricity bills with the prices that we are charging at the moment.”
